A couple of final thoughts about Functionality. The donor Kettle Grill lid gives me some additional room for larger pieces of meat such as a Turkey. There is nothing wrong with using the flat barrel lid, this lid just adds some space, and besides, it already had a functional vent and closer.
Building the UDS drum "upside down" puts the original removable barrel lid on the bottom. This will make cleanout very easy. I can lay it over like this, and use my leaf blower to clean it out (after the coals are dead of course). My pressure washer may be useful too.
Everyone has their own preferred way to make supports for the grills. I have seen simple bolts, eyebolts, etc. I noticed these "U" bolt clamps at Home Depot and decided that they were for me and my project. I decided to use 4 supports instead of the usual 3. If you install 4 "U"s, and use 2 grills, make sure that you allow clearance on the top supports to get the lower grill into place on the lower set of supports. My top "U"s came out very close to not allowing the lower grill to slip past them and make it into place. You could of course use 4 supports on the lower grill, and 3 supports for the top grill. That would insure clearance for positioning the lower grill on it's supports.

Very mobile with wheels.

The "U" bolts will require extra nuts to locate them inside the drum. Don't forget to buy 2 extra nuts per "U" bolt.
The hinged lid is going to work out very well!
